Lessons from Episode 1
Success is a Long-Term Game: Your success and happiness depend on your willingness to cultivate your gifts and abilities over time, with the understanding that there will not always be an immediate reward for doing so.
Surround Yourself with Excellence: Place yourself in spaces where others are excelling at similar passions to your own. Being willing to learn from people, and gain insights into the mental frameworks and skills that serve them, will sharpen you.
Art Markets Require Hustle: Understanding the market is just as important for an artist as it is for a real estate entrepreneur or investor to understand the contours of the property or stock market. If you want to earn money from art while you’re alive, there are some things you must know. There are levers hidden in plain sight that artists and collectors can pull to increase the value of art being produced and collected.
There are Two Approaches to Art Collecting: You can “Buy what you love” or “Buy as an investment for future appreciation.” Winning in the latter is scientific, and requires intentional, entrepreneurial hustle.
Profiting from Art is Strategic Storytelling: The appeal and power of art lie in the narrative it conveys. Works of art are storybooks, lifted from the pages of people’s histories to be visually displayed. Artists often miss the importance of building a narrative when they present their work, but art collectors who financially win the game of collecting understand the importance of storytelling better than anyone else.
There are Untapped Investment Opportunities in Art, Especially for African Americans: Artists and collectors, especially African Americans, should own and value their narratives and culture with far more intentionality. African art holds the keys to uncovering hidden cultural, societal, and historical understandings, with colors and other visual elements holding hidden meanings and stories. African Americans often miss art investment opportunities by undervaluing their narratives. However, our stories serve as the most vibrant, valuable, and resonant threads in United States history. Collaboration with friends to invest in art, learning how to create commercial agreements and contracts, and celebrating unique stories through art are critical.
